    Up fo auction is circa 1862 CDV photograph of Union Major General John E. Wool ( 1784 - 1869 ) who was an officer in the United States Army during three consecutive U.S. wars : the War of 1812 , the Mexican - American War , and the American Civil War. In the Civil War , Wool who was 77 years old when the Civil War began in April , 1861 was the oldest general officer to execute active commend in either army during the war. Because he was considered a capable officer and was superb organizer he became the de facto Military Commander of New York City during the draft riots from July 13 - 17 . 1863.
