GREAT CDV OF OFFICER IN 51 ST ILLINOIS INFANTRY

Description

CDV with rare Laporte, Indiana backmark of Captain Adam S. Hetfield, Companies C and E,
51 st Illinois Infantry. Hetfield, a civil engineer born in Fountain County, Indiana, enlisted from
Middleport, Iroquois County, Illinois in Company C in September 1861 and served through the
war, was promoted to second lieutenant in December 1862, and finally to captain in September
1865. The 51 st saw extensive action, including Island No. 10, Stones River, Chickamauga,
Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, and Franklin. Has period pencil identification.
