    This photo of Lee pre dates the Civil War era, I've seen
    various ideas about the date, but they generally fall around
    the time of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) or a
    short time later.

    Born Jan. 19, 1807 - Died Oct. 12, 1870
    U.S. Military Academy at West Point 1825-1829
    17 years with the Army Corps of Engineers
    Served in Mexican-American War
    Superintendent of West Point 1852-1855
    1855 left West Point and joined cavalry
    1861 resigned U.S. Army joined Confederate Army
    His command was named the Army of Northern Virginia
    Surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant April 9, 1865
