7th Virginia Cavalry
. Killed in action near Harrisonburg, Virginia, June 6, 1862, while leading a charge.
After his death he was taken to the
Frank Kemper
house in Port Republic - "Legend holds that the women of Port Republic prepared his body for burial, placing a red rose over the wound where the bullet had entered. The body wrapped in a Confederate flag, was laid to rest in the front corner room of the house, under a window", where his remains were photographed.
This CDV photograph is taken from the original postmortem view, by a photographer which has taken a poetic license by enhancing the photo and opening Turner Ashby's eyes to make him appear life like.
