and also the
VMI Cadet Battalion
.

. Born Texas Nov. 11, 1849. Student, age 12, Fredericksburg 1860 census. Enlisted Jul. 27, 1864 age 16. Age 17 on rolls Aug. 27, 1864. Paroled Richmond Apr. 22, 1865. Student, age 22, Fredericksburg census. Cotton broker, Houston, Texas, 1889 census. Died Jan. 31, 1890. Buried City Cemetery Fredericksburg."

The
3rd Local Defense
was organized in Sept. 1864 mostly from young boys under age of 18, and men serving in Confederate Depts. Often included were men who had served their enlistment time, been wounded, or elder men. They were called out to fight at Saylor's (Sailor's) Creek April 6, 1865, and took part in the Appomattox Campaign.
