    Description

    This is an original 1870's "Carte de visite" (CDV) albumen photo print of "Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore" famous composer & band leader. Born in Ireland Gilmore moved to America in 1848 and as a cornetist later became a bandleader in the Union Army. After the Civil War ended in 1863 he wrote the famous song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". He then became music director of the 1869 "Peace Jubilee" in Boston, Massachusetts. Afterwards he formed and directed the "Gilmore Band" until his untimely death in 1892. This CDV albumen photo measures approx 4 18" x 2 1/2" and is in very good clean condition with minor edge wear and glue residue spots on reverse but no tears or creases. Thanks for looking.
