    Description

VERY rare and original, 1860's CDV Photograph of United States Navy Civil War Rear Admiral Andrew Hull Foote by Mathew Brady. This fantastic, period, albumen Photograph measures approx. 2 1/8” by 3 3/8” and is mounted on its original, square corner, photographer’s Card Mount (card measures approx 2 1/4" x 4"). The rear of the card mount carries the E. & H. T. Anthony / Brady backmark that reads in part "Published by E. & H. T. Anthony... From Photographic Negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery"
This outstanding, full length, standing portrait was taken sometime between late 1862, when Foote was promoted to the then-new rank of Rear Admiral in the US Navy and June 1863 when he died suddenly while on his way to take command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. It pictures Foote wearing a frock coat with epaulets holding a for and aft hat in his left hand and cradling his sheathed sword in the crook of his right arm.
Andrew Hull Foote (September 12, 1806 – June 26, 1863) was an American naval officer who was noted for his service in the American Civil War and also for his contributions to several naval reforms in the years prior to the war. When the war came, he was appointed to command of the Western Gunboat Flotilla, predecessor of the Mississippi River Squadron. In that position, he led the gunboats in the Battle of Fort Henry. For his services with the Western Gunboat Flotilla, Foote was among the first naval officers to be promoted to the then-new rank of rear admiral.
This rare and wonderful CDV Photograph is in excellent condition. The Image itself is clean and crisp and exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The card mount is also very well preserved.
A very rare and original, 1860's CDV Photograph of United States Navy Rear Admiral Andrew H. Foote by Mathew Brady and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
