Rare and original, 1860's CDV Photograph of Union Civil War General and later United States President Ulysses S. Grant by Mathew Brady published in Memphis, Tennessee.
This period, albumen CDV Photo is oval shape cut and measures approx. 1 3/8" by 1 7/8" and is mounted within an elaborate, printed frame device. The Photo is mounted on its original photographer’s card mount which measures approx. 2 1/2” by 4” and carries the mark of the Memphis, Tennessee photographer H. A. Balch. The portrait is taken from an earlier Mathew Brady portrait without retouching or enhancement and came to us from the legendary Brown Water Navy Collection of Richard B. Cohen.
This rare and original, CDV Portrait of Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant is in very good condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich. Both the Photograph and the Mount are clean and crisp although the card mount is clipped at the corners to facilitate insertion into a period CDV Photo Album.
