    Description

Rare and original, 1860's Signed / Autographed CDV Photograph of a United States Navy Civil War Captain (later Rear Admiral) James Alden of the USS South Carolina. This period, albumen Photograph measures approx. 2 1/2” by 4” including its original, square corner, gold rule border, photographer’s card mount.
This is a vignette bust portrait of Captain Alden wearing a frock coat with Navy buttons. The mount is signed below the image "James Alden / Capt. U. S. Navy". The mount is blank backed with no photographer’s mark.
This original CDV Photograph came to us from the legendary Brown Water Navy Collection of Richard B. Cohen.
James Alden Jr. (March 31, 1810 – February 6, 1877) was a rear admiral in the United States Navy. In the Mexican–American War he participated in the captures of Veracruz, Tuxpan, and Tabasco. Fighting on the Union side in the Civil War, he took part in the relief of Fort Pickens, followed by many engagements on the Lower Mississippi, before being promoted captain of USS Brooklyn and assisting in the Union victory in the Battle of Mobile Bay.
Alden entered the Navy as a midshipman on April 1, 1828 and became a passed midshipman May 14, 1834. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant February 25, 1841, commander September 14, 1855, captain Captain January 2, 1863, commodore July 25, 1866, rear admiral June 18, 1871 and he retired March 31, 1872. He saw service in the Mexican-American War and following the War he commanded ships of the U. S. Coast Survey.
The advent of war found Alden in command of the USS South Carolina in which he participated in the relief of Fort Pickens. He shifted to the Gulf Squadron in charge of the stream sloop USS Richmond and was engaged during the passage of Forts Jackson and St. Philip, and in the engagement with Rebel batteries at Chalmette, Louisiana. Alden sailed with Farragut during the fleet's passage past the guns at Vicksburg and later repeated the daring movement down the Mississippi to become engaged at Port Hudson. He then took command of the steam sloop USS Brooklyn which was present for both assaults on the Confederate bastion at Fort Fisher, North Carolina. The pinnacle of Rear Admiral Alden's career came with the year-long command of the prestigious European Station in 1872.
This rare and original, albumen CDV Photograph is in very good condition. The Photograph exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. Both the Photo and the mount are clean and crisp although there is a light, horizontal crease to the image and the mount near the bottom edge.
