Description
Exceptionally rare and original, 1860’s Hand Colored, Albumen CDV Photograph of the Battle Flag of the 95th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. This simply fantastic, CDV Photo measures approx. 2 1/2" by 4" (including the original, photographer’s card mount). The CDV Photo offered here features the tattered remains of a Civil War Battle Flag with red and blue hand coloring. A sign mounted on the wall at the left behind the Battle Flag identifies it as the Battle Flag of the 95th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers “Carried in Thirty Two Engagements”. The tattered remnants of the Battle Flag hang proud and undefeated from its flag pole presenting an image of the courage and resolve of those young men who fought bravely under its protection.
The 95th Pennsylvania Infantry was a volunteer infantry regiment which served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. This regiment was also sometimes referred to as Gosline's Zouaves because its members wore Zouave-style uniforms during the early portion of their service tenure. As the war progressed, the regiment's uniforms were modified, keeping the Zouave-style jackets and vests, but eliminating the scarlet pants, scarlet-trimmed kepis, and tan gaiters. The regiment was engaged in battle at Gaines' Mill, Crampton's Gap, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and others throughout the duration of the Civil War. 11 Officers and 171 enlisted men from the regiment were killed in action and another 72 members of the Regiment died of disease. Three of its members were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
The mount is blank backed and the CDV carries no photographer’s or publisher’s mark however there is an early manuscript identification on the verso.
This rare and quite beautiful, CDV Photograph is in very good to excellent condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. The hand coloring is bright and bold and very attractive. Both the Photo and the Card Mount are clean and crisp and very well preserved however the mount is clipped at the corners to facilitate insertion into a period CDV Photo Album..
