VERY rare and fantastic, 1860’s Hand Colored, Quarter Plate Civil War Ambrotype Photograph of a Union Army First Sergeant. This outstanding, period Ambrotype Photograph measures approx. 3 1/8” by 4 1/8” and is housed in one half of what appears to be its original pressed paper hard case with original brass matt, binding and cover glass.
This wonderful, period copy Ambrotype is a wonderful, three quarter length portrait of a Civil War Union First Sergeant seated with his hands crossed on his lap. He wears a frock coat with chevrons that identify him as a First Sergeant. His shirt is lightly tinted red and his regulation trousers blue. Overall the Image is VERY attractive and striking!! Neither the subject nor the photographer are identified in any way.
This rare and wonderful, Civil War Ambrotype Portrait of a Union Army Non-Com Officer is in very good. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. The emulsion is generally well preserved with some loss at the edges as can be seen in the scans below. As stated above, this is a period, copy image and the pressed matt of the original portrait can be seen in the Ambrotype image. The surface is sound and stable. As stated above, the Image is housed in what appears to be one half of its original pressed paper hard case which is somewhat worn.
