0164----Lt William Jones 16th US Colored Troops CDV Knoxville IL - Meadville PA
    Description
Amazing original CDV of Lieutenant William Jones of the 16th US Colored Troops.
A fine 2/3 body image holding his hat in his left hand. You can clearly see the "16" hat badge.
He is identified in period ink on the reverse bottom:
"Lt Wm Jones Co D U.S. CT."
I have done the research and it is all confirmed.
Williams Jones was born in Meadville PA, and lived in Crawford County PA as a young man, later moving to Knoxville IL, and living out his life, passing away there in 1917.
He was first a member of the 83rd IL infantry, discharged for promotion,
then commissioned into the 16th US Colored Troops.
(See below for his basic service records).
He was originally in Co K of the 16th, then promoted to 1st Lt and transferred to Co D.
This photo was taken in 1866 (dated on reverse) by T.M. Schleier of Nashville TN,
where Lt. Jones was mustered out in early 66.
There is a well known Lookout Mountain photo in the Library of Congress,
which portrays Jones and other officers of the 16th US Colored Troops.
They are all identified and Jones is labeled as #5 ( see info below)
There is no doubt this is the Lieutenant sitting in the back at #5.
